Kealakekua Bay

Kealakekua Bay, or simply "K Bay" as it is often referred to, is a sheltered bay approximately a mile across. Famous for being the landing site, and final resting place, of Captain James Cook.

The bay is a Marine Life Conservation District. Spinner dolphins visit the bay throughout the year and humpback whales visit during their Hawaii season.

A sheer cliff, or "Pali" in Hawaiian, runs down to the water. Snorkeling and scuba diving is fantastic at the base of the cliff. The coral-covered bottom slopes away from the shore allowing for great deep-water scuba diving.

The snorkelling is some of the best in Hawaii with coral and reef fish and occasional green sea turtles and manta rays. Kayaking in the bay and visiting the Captain Cook monument is a favorite pasttime.

Kealakekua Bay is an easy drive 15 miles south of Kailua-Kona or 20 miles south of Keahole airport.
